French Ligue 1 released the video of a penalty kick initially awarded by referee Clement Turpin and then reversed after an on-field review initiated by the video assistant referee. The video is from a Ligue 1 game played in the last matchday of the 2022-2023 season and contains the full dialogue between the referee and players and then the conversation with the VAR.
It was a just an experiment run by the French League, with the aim to make all participants on the pitch accountable of their behaviour/speech, since some players were accusing referees of talking badly and vice-versa. Also, Ligue 1 would like to improve its relationship with the fans by explaining what’s going on during a VAR review, allowing viewers to understand the referee’s philosophy within the context of the game.
