Siebert: “Going to Euro is a dream”

In addition to Felix Brych, Daniel Siebert, a second German referee, was appointed to the Euro this summer. The nomination is not only a surprise for experts, but also for the 36-year-old Berliner himself. On the day of the nomination, Siebert could hardly put his luck into words. In was a Bundesliga match day and Siebert was assigned to the game Hoffenheim against Mönchengladbach. "We were in the car, from the Frankfurt Airport to Sinsheim, when a message about the Euro referee team popped up on my assistant Lasse Koslowski’s mobile phone. It also said my name," reports the 36-year-old. "That was madness - and I had to deal with that first." Jan Seidel was also there in the car. He was not only scheduled as an assistant in Hoffenheim, but will also accompany his "boss" in this role to the Euro. Rafael Foltyn from Wiesbaden will also be there as an assistant. "It was funny that I was able to speak to Rafael Foltyn briefly on the day of the nomination because he was assigned as a video assistant for our game in Hoffenheim," said Siebert of the arrival at the stadium in Sinsheim. After the short joy, the full concentration was then on the Bundesliga game. "The game went well. And then we had a toast in the stadium with a glass of Alsterwasser or Radler. That had to be. But now I will remain an ascetic until after the European Championships," says the 1.90 meter tall referee.
Champions League debut in 2018
Daniel Siebert has been a referee since 1998. He referees for FC Nordost Berlin. Since 2009 he has been leading games in the 2nd Bundesliga. His first encounter in the German upper house of football was the encounter between FC Schalke and FC Augsburg three years later. Another 120 games have been added since then. The first international match under his direction was the encounter between Luxembourg and Moldova in June 2015. He made his debut in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League in October 2018 in Liverpool's 4-0 win against Red Star Belgrade. The surprise of being called to the 2020 European Championship was so big because Siebert was primarily pursuing a different goal: "I wanted to be promoted to the Elite category, the highest ranking in European refereeing." So far, the 36-year-old belongs to the second highest category, the First category. "When I was recently scheduled for the Europa League quarter-final Dinamo Zagreb against Villarreal, I was told that this was an important game. I thought it was for my promotion, though." As it turned out in retrospect, this statement was more likely to refer to the Euro nomination. Either way, the game went very well from the referee's point of view and Team Siebert received a lot of praise. Obviously a door opener. "I don't know if it has ever happened that a referee who does not belong to the highest category has been invited to such a big tournament," he says - and there is a little pride in his words.
"Referee with a great understanding of football"
Even if referees know that some matches are ground-breaking for their further advancement, it would be too easy to make this success dependent only on the game in Zagreb. Siebert has been convincing for a long time with consistently very good performances - nationally and internationally. "He is a referee with a great understanding of football and good communication on the field," says Lutz-Michael Fröhlich, the sporting director of the Geramn elite referees. "In his role as a referee, he is very straightforward." From June 7, all Euro referees will move into their camp in Istanbul. UEFA will decide at short notice the actual appointments of the 51 games between June 11 and July 11. "It feels like a dream," says the German referee and still can't really believe that he is there. Despite his success, the Berliner has remained down to earth. When the first wave of congratulations and press inquiries has subsided, he wants to calmly prepare for the tournament. He is used to pressure. Referees at this level have to endure it, as Siebert and his team recently demonstrated at the top match between RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich in early April.
Professional and personal happiness
At the Euro, a significant change is likely to come for the referees, because spectators will probably be admitted to the games. "For more than a year we have got used to refereeing games without an audience. If there are 10,000 or 20,000 spectators again now, it will be a different situation, a different stadium feeling. We have to be mentally prepared for that," thinks the 36-year-old, very specific about the tournament. But at this moment he also thinks of another event that, for once, has nothing to do with football: This year, he and his wife will become parents for the first time. The couple is really looking forward to it. The child will probably be born during the Euro. Even if Daniel Siebert may not be there at the birth, he will at least be able to tell his child later about what he experienced at the European Championship.

The FIFA certification required for Concacaf to implement Video assistant referees (VAR) has been processed faster than anticipated. For this reason, Concacaf can now confirm that the technology will be used for the 2021 Concacaf Champions League (SCCL) Quarter-final stage and for the remainder of the competition. Tonight’s Quarter-final first leg match between Atlanta United FC and Philadelphia Union will be the first match in an official Concacaf competition to include VAR. It will subsequently be used for all Quarter-final, Semi-final and Final matches throughout the 2021 SCCL. As previously announced, Concacaf will also use VAR in the Concacaf Nations League Finals and the 2021 Gold Cup. (Source: Concacaf)

Marciniak: “I had known for a long time that I would not go to Euro as a result of my health problems”

Euro 2020. Polish referee Szymon Marciniak outside the tournament. “I will immediately inform those who would like to bury Marciniak and celebrate his end: it is too early for that. I had known for a long time that I would not be on the Euro list. This is the result of my health problems”, says Szymon Marciniak in an interview with Interia.
- UEFA has announced the list of referees who will officiate Euro 2020 matches and, unexpectedly, you are not there. Are you surprised?
- Not at all.
- Do you judge your form so badly?
- It's good that some people are very cheerful about it, because it was a crazy atmosphere. So, I will immediately inform those who would like to bury Marciniak and celebrate his end: it is too early for that. I had known for a long time that I would not be on the Euro list.
- Why? And how did you find out about UEFA's decision?
- The decision was made in early April after my last medical tests. However, I had a phone call from Roberto Rosetti, who is UEFA's chief referee, a few days before the list was officially announced. We have known each other for many years and I knew that it was a difficult decision for him and he was humanly sorry. As a team, we have extensive tournament experience and we would be useful, but this is the life of an athlete.
- Why are you not on the list? I can't believe they didn't count on you for Euro...
- In April it was possible for me to referee one of the quarter-finals of the UEFA competitions, but I didn't get the match and then I realized that I would lose the Euro. Health problems stood in my way. As you know, I have had Covid-19. And it was the coronavirus that turned out to be a problem. I fell ill with tachycardia, which disturbs the rhythm of my heartbeat. At one point, my heart rate was elevated even while I was sitting down, as if I was walking briskly. I am still not 100% sure what the genesis of this disease is, but there are many indications of the coronavirus. Tachycardia is not something that can be cured in a week, like a cold. I have been under the constant care of Professor Krzysztof Pawlaczyk for some time and we are slowly heading in the right direction.
- But you still referee in the Polish Ekstraklasa. Recently, in the 26th round, you refereed the match between Jagiellonia Białystok and Stal Mielec. And a few others before that.
- I will be brutally honest: the difference in the intensity of work in Ekstraklasa versus Euro is huge. That is why no one at UEFA wanted to take risks and send me to a tournament or a UEFA Champions League quarter-final. I understand that and I have no complaints. I know that there are more important things in life than work and refereeing, although I have to admit that the last two years have been very hard for me. First, a spine injury, and now the coronavirus...
- Former FIFA referee Ryszard Wojcik said strong words in an interview with Interia: "Szymon is still faced with a dilemma: to referee the most important matches in Europe or earn good money on refereeing. For several years, however, the latter has probably been a bit more important in the hierarchy of his goals. I do not know any referees from the best leagues in Europe that would systematically travel to other climatic zones for several dozen hours to referee one match". How do you answer that?
- What can I say? He fired a bullet at the fence. In 2019, the UEFA Referees Committee decided that any appointment of a referee to lead a match in another country goes through UEFA. So, if the Saudis want Marciniak, they are not calling Poland, but UEFA. And if UEFA agrees, it will ask in Poland if Marciniak can go. So, it's hard for UEFA referees to not be influenced by... UEFA decisions. Besides, since 2019 I did not travel that much. In 2020, I refereed the Saudi King's Cup Final. Do you know who refereed the Super Cup there? Daniele Orsato, who recently refereed the Champions League final. The referees such as the German Felix Brych, the Dutchman Björn Kuipers and the Slovene Damir Skomina also travel to other countries. Each of them knows that an invitation to a different league is an appreciation, not a punitive exile.
- What's next? Are you going to the championship as a fan?
- Nothing special. I work hard on my health recovery and I hope that in July I will be returning to work at top level. In 2015, I refereed the matches of the European U-21 Championship, a year later was Euro 2016, followed by an intense 2017 and the U-20 World Cup in South Korea and then the 2018 World Cup in Russia. During this time, I didn't really have a real vacation, so I'm going to use the period in June for regeneration.

As part of an exchange program within the framework of the cooperation agreement between UEFA and CONMEBOL, for the first time ever a South American referee will join the European group of referees and a European will travel to South America. Argentinian referee Fernando Rapallini and his assistants will join the selected European referees for Euro 2020, while a Spanish refereeing team led by Jesus Gil Manzano will be part of the selected CONMEBOL referees for the Copa America 2021 in Argentina and Colombia.
Also for the first time, a female official has been selected for a men’s Euro. Stephanie Frappart (France), who has officiated at several matches in UEFA’s men’s club and national team competitions this season, has been selected as support match official, and will be acting as fourth official at matches together with other colleagues. Each refereeing team will consist of a referee, two assistant referees, a fourth official, a reserve assistant referee at the stadium, and a team of four video match officials.
The preparation of the officials for UEFA Euro 2020 will include a course for all referees, referee assistants and video match officials, which will take place in Istanbul, Turkey, from 10 to 13 May 2021. Referees, assistant referees and support referees will have their base camp in Istanbul from 7 June until the completion of the quarter-finals, after which the remaining match officials will move to London for the final three matches. UEFA vs European Super League

The European Super League was created "to save football", says Real Madrid president Florentino Perez. Real are one of the 12 European clubs who have signed up to the breakaway league and intend to establish a new midweek competition. Perez said the move had been made because young people are "no longer interested in football" because of "a lot of poor quality games". "Whenever there is change, there are always people who oppose it," he said. Perez said that the top teams were losing money and that big-name matches would help increase their revenue. "We are doing this to save football at this critical moment," Perez told Spanish TV show El Chiringuito de Jugones. "If we continue with the Champions League there is less and less interest and then it's over. The new format which starts in 2024 is absurd. In 2024, we are all dead." He added: "In the '50s, it was a similar situation. UEFA and FIFA went against the new European Cup, but that competition changed football."
AC Milan chief executive Ivan Gazidis said the ESL would be "a new, exciting chapter for the game" and that it will "provide value and support" across European football. "We're confident that this new competition will capture the imagination of billions of soccer fans all over the world," he said. Gazidis also said the club wants to continue to play in Serie A, which he said "will remain the most important weekend competition in Italy". Juventus manager Andrea Pirlo came out in support of the ESL and the club's owner Andrea Agnelli, who quit as European Club Association (ECA) chairman after signing the Turin club up to the new competition. "He explained this project to us, he gave us great confidence, but the most important thing he told us is that we have to continue with our work," Pirlo said.
Perez said the move had been accelerated by the coronavirus pandemic, which has led to matches being played behind closed doors. He claimed 40% of young people are not interested in football and Real have lost 400m euros (£344m) because of the impact of the pandemic. "When you don't have any income other than from television, you have to find a solution to make more attractive matches that fans all over the world can watch with all of the big clubs," said Perez. "Young people are no longer interested in football. They have other platforms on which to distract themselves. We could get back some of the money we lost because of the pandemic. We have to raise more money organising more competitive games." There has been no concrete plan released on how the tournament would be structured, but Perez said it could have shorter matches in order to keep their targeted younger audience interested. "Young people say the game is too long," he said. "If young people don't watch an entire game it is because it is not interesting enough, or we will have to shorten the games." He also said that referees and the video review system would be "improved" in the tournament. "There will be financial fair play and stability. We'll try to select the referees with professional criteria," he added. Another three teams will be added to the league as guaranteed members, with five more qualifying each year. Perez said the group want to start the new league by August, should they reach an agreement with UEFA, otherwise it could be delayed by a year.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin called the league a "disgraceful, self-serving" plan and a "spit in the face of football lovers". Ceferin also said that players involved with the ESL could be banned from all UEFA competitions, which Perez denied. "It will not happen, the law protects us," Perez added. "We will not get into legal issues. It is impossible. The players should remain calm because the threats won't happen. "This is not a league for the rich, it's a league to save football." (Source: BBC)
The 45th Ordinary UEFA Congress unanimously approved a declaration strongly condemning the so-called Super League: “The 55 member associations and participants in the UEFA Congress condemn the declaration of a so- called “Super League.” The UEFA Congress is adamant that the closed “Super League” goes against the very concept of what it is to be European: unified, open, supportive, and principled on sporting values. UEFA and its member associations believe in a truly European model that is founded on open competitions, solidarity and redistribution to ensure the sustainability and development of the game for the benefit of all and the promotion of European values and social outcomes. The conspirator clubs have obviously failed to see that their status today was not achieved in isolation, but rather was part of a dynamic European system where big, medium and small clubs have all contributed to the successes and losses of everyone. It is an affront to European values and sporting merit for them to assume they are entitled to “separate” and lay claim to the legacy that everyone built. UEFA, its member associations and all those who love football stand firm and will strongly resist and fight against this move by these clubs’ owners and their backers to the fullest extent possible. We know, morally, what is at stake and will protect football from a selfish clan who care nothing for the game. We are European football. They are not.” (Source: UEFA)
