Wilmar Roldan refereed the second leg of the Round of 16 match between Universitario de Peru and Corinthians. Everything seemed to be controlled by the Colombian referee until the last minutes, when a goal celebration made it one of the most complicated in recent years of his career.
The home team needed to overcome a 0-1 defeat in the first leg played in Brazil, Roldan had a very good first half, without any concerns. The second half was filled with tension after the first goal of Corinthians, when the visitors went ahead 2-0 on aggregate. At minute 77 came the first challenge for Roldan, when he penalized a handball in the penalty area by the Corinthians defense. The local team kept attacking in search of the goal that would keep them alive, but it never came; on the contrary, the second goal scored by the Brazilian team at minute 90+2 settled everything. The goal celebration caused problems, friction, and scandal, to such an extent that the police had to intervene. Roldan remained calm, observed the situation and leaned on the VAR, that gave him details of what he could not see. When the Corinthians players wanted to leave the field, Roldan called them back and started to hand out red cards. In total there were 5 red cards (4 players and 1 substitute): 3 for Universitario and 2 for Corinthians. Both teams ended up with only 9 players for the 22 minutes added on by referee Roldan.
