The Guatemalan refereeing is in mourning. Former FIFA assistant referee Flor de Maria Escobar died at only 37 years of age from Covid-19. For more than 12 years, Flor de Maria was part of the national referee program. She was one of the pioneers in Guatemalan female refereeing and represented her country in various international tournaments, including Algarve Cup (2008) and FIFA U-20 World Cups in Chile (2008) and Germany (2010).
In 2016, she retired from active refereeing to dedicate to her family; however, the passion and love she had for this profession, made her take on a new challenge, working on the fitness preparation of the referees from Quetzaltenango. To say their last good-bye, several referees and friends blew their whistles and raised AR flags as the vehicle carrying Flor de Maria's body approached the entrance to the Quetzaltenango cemetery.
