Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte accidentally injured assistant referee Gary Beswick in the first half of their Premier League fixture at the London Stadium on Sunday. The Spain centre-back trod on the foot of the official and left him needing medical treatment, though thankfully he was able to soldier on. The amusing incident came early in the first half.
As the ball came over to the near side touchline, Laporte was one of a group of players battling to keep it in play and gain possession. In the end, it bounced away with the Hammers and Laporte began to chase back and re-join his defence. As he did so, while looking in the opposite direction towards the ball, he inadvertently studded Beswick, who stumbled to the ground as a result. At the next break in play, he dropped his flag and went down again. He then received treatment from the West Ham medical team.
While this happened, he received little sympathy from those around him. Referee Anthony Taylor was seen chuckling about the situation. West Ham manager David Moyes jokingly accused him of diving. And the home fans chanted: “Are you Grealish in disguise?” In the end he only caused a brief stoppage though, returning to his feet to get the game back up and running. Laporte ran over to him, shook his hand and gave him a small embrace as an apology.
