CAF: Doue appointed Director of Refereeing

The Ivorian Noumandiez Doue has recently been appointed Director of Refereeing by CAF to replace Seychellois Eddy Maillet. Doue will be responsible for the reorganization of African refereeing, which has been decried in recent years by the poor performance of certain „men in black” on the continent.
Kept secret by CAF for several days, the appointment of the former Ivorian international referee, Noumandiez Doue has become official. By succeeding Eddy Mallet, the new boss of African refereeing must restore the image of referees on the continent at a time when their performances are increasingly criticized during international competitions. "Yes, it's official, I’m the new CAF Refereeing Director," said Noumandiez Doue, when he was contacted by phone in Cairo where he currently is for the formalities of the transfer of charges. The former FIFA referee is now brought back at the top of the African refereeing. He will take care, in collaboration with his new team, of the continuous improvement of the level of the referees through training, matche appointments and the supervision of all the activities related to the refereeing on the continent. He will also deal with disputes that will be brought to his attention. The new director will also have to face the often virulent criticism coming from the African countries.
This appointment is a great reward for Noumandiez Doue. Aged 51, he is considered one of the referees with the richest background and record in Côte d'Ivoire and one of the most "capped" in Africa. He was truly propelled onto the continental scene in 2009 when he officiated the final of the first edition of CHAN in Côte d'Ivoire (2009). Thereafter, everything went very quickly for the referee coming from the western region of Côte d'Ivoire. He was also selected for the U-17 AFCON two years later and took part in the 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015 AFCONs. In 2011, he officiated in the Champions League final and was named CAF's Referee of the Year. Doue reached the pinnacle of his career in 2014 when he refereed at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
In his country, he was the President of the Central Committee of Referees (CCA) from 2016 to 2022. Appointed FIFA instructor a few years ago, he was Eddy Maillet's assistant since November 2021, before taking the reins of the African refereeing. Pharmacist by profession, Noumandiez Doue is renowned for his competence, but above all for his rigour in his work that earned him enmity from some Ivorian referees who are currently divided into four groups and made him quit his position in his home country earlier this year.

Two-time World Cup referee Cakir ends his career

Cuneyt Cakir, a well-known football referee in Europe, ended his long-time career Thursday, according to the head of the governing body of football in Turkey. Mehmet Büyükekshi, president of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), thanked 45-year-old Cakir for his contributions to Turkish football during a live TV broadcast. Büyükekshi said that Cakir, a FIFA referee since 2006, recently requested to leave his job at Turkey’s Central Refereeing Committee (MHK). "Last week, we held a camp with our referees in the northern province of Bolu. During the seminar, Cuneyt Cakir informed the MHK that he wants to leave his post", Büyükekshi said. He added that Cakir had several offers abroad, but the Turkish referee wanted to end his career in Turkey, as the country has provided so many opportunities to him. Büyükekshi stated that Cakir wants to train referees in lower categories in the future so that he can contribute to Turkish refereeing. The Turkish football body's president added that the MHK, TFF and its board approved his request.
The Turkish referee officiated matches in the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups and refereed the 2015 UEFA Champions League final when Barcelona beat Juventus 3-1 in Berlin. He was last assigned to referee several matches at the UEFA Euro 2020, which was won by Italy in the summer of 2021. Cakir previously appeared in the Euro 2012 and Euro 2016 tournaments. He has been a regular referee in the Champions League since 2010 and officiated many matches in the Europa League. “Cakir has represented our country in two World Cups and three European Championships. He has refereed the Champions League final in 2015 and three semi-finals of the Champions League. Cakir represented Turkish football in many tournaments. I hope we can organize a farewell match for our teacher. We want to conduct it properly. I would like to thank Cuneyt Cakir for all the work he has done. I wish him good luck in his future work”, Büyükekshi said, noting that despite many proposals from abroad, Cakir plans to improve the development of referees in Turkey.
Cakir’s farewell message: “I am ending my refereeing adventure, which started 28 years ago with big dreams, with the pride of having achieved my dreams. Easy to say, every moment of these 28 years was very precious. I approached all matches with the same seriousness, from my first amateur competition to my last highest-level competition. I worked hard, very hard. I am happy if I could help to raise the level of Turkish football refereeing. The prayers of the Turkish nation with 80 million people were always with me during my duties in international high-level competitions. This gave me great strength and pride. My other big wish was to be a role model for the Turkish youth, who followed me and considered me as an example, and for the Turkish refereeing. I have always felt this responsibility. I am grateful for the trust shown and the messages of love received. Thanks to the Turkish refereeing, I became Cüneyt Çakir. With this awareness, I took the decision to share my experience with young Turkish referees today. I want to watch them and contribute to their development. There are tens and thousands of people who have worked with me. Thank you all. I would like to thank my precious instructors, who brought me to where I am today, my referee friends, our federation, our referee managers, all friends who supported me in the media, the officials and referee managers of international federations, my dear family who is always with me, and the Turkish people who always support me with their prayers. As I have done so far, I will continue to work hard to contribute to Turkish refereeing. I am happy if I could leave nice memories behind me. Stay well...” (Source: TFF)

The UEFA Referees Committee has appointed Michael Oliver (England) to referee the 2022 UEFA Super Cup match between Real Madrid CF and Eintracht Frankfurt, which will take place on Wednesday 10 August at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium (kick-off 21:00 CET). The 37-year-old official has been an international referee since 2012 and officiates regularly at UEFA club competition and international matches. He was also selected as a referee for UEFA Euro 2020, where he took charge of three matches, including the quarter-final between Switzerland and Spain.
UEFA is proud to announce that the Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) will premiere in European club competitions at the UEFA Super Cup match in Helsinki. Furthermore, SAOT will also be used as of the group stage in the upcoming UEFA Champions League season. "UEFA is constantly looking for new technological solutions to improve the game and support the work of the referees. This innovative system will allow VAR teams to determine offside situations quickly and more accurately, enhancing the flow of the game and the consistency of the decisions", said UEFA Chief Refereeing Officer Roberto Rosetti. The new system will operate thanks to specialised cameras which are able to track 29 different body points per player. A total of 188 tests have been performed since 2020, including all matches in last season's UEFA Champions League, the knock-out stage of the UEFA Women's Champions League, and the complete Women's Euro final tournament, as well as the other club competition finals. "The system is ready to be used in official matches and implemented at each Champions League venue", Rosetti confirmed. (Source: UEFA)
