Saudi Arabia is tempting Marciniak with a million-dollar contract

Szymon Marciniak will referee the UEFA Champions League final between Manchester City and Inter Milan on Saturday. The 42-year-old will be only the second referee in history to whistle the World Cup final (Argentina - France) and the most important club match on the planet in one season. The first was Howard Webb in 2010. This fact already indicates what status he currently has. He's the best. And that's what the Saudis want. If they bring in top players, top referees must whistle for them.

Marciniak is known and respected in Saudi Arabia. He has been refereeing individual matches there for years - most recently, in May, the final of the King's Cup of Saudi Arabia, Al Hilal – Al Wehda. But as we hear - now it's about something bigger. To work permanently, refereeing the most important matches, but also being responsible for creating a network of other great referees who would referee in the Saudi league, which would increase its prestige. According to our information, the Saudis tempt Marciniak with a contract over several years (to our knowledge, it is three seasons) and a multi-million-dollar salary - absolutely unheard of among referees in the world of football, even at the highest level. According to "Business Insider", Marciniak received $10,000 from FIFA for refereeing the World Cup final. For the entire tournament, he was paid $93,000. The Saudi offer is huge, but there are also catches. If Marciniak would accept such a lucrative offer, and it would involve moving to the Arabian Peninsula, the question is how would such a transfer affect his presence on the international arena? Under normal circumstances, nominations for the FIFA badges are made annually by home federations - in this case, Polish Federation (PZPN). Would Marciniak have to give up something by accepting the offer from the Saudis, or are these things to be dealt with? It is probably too early for such speculations. For now, this is "only" an offer, although according to our knowledge, it is cosmic. Like that of Cristiano Ronaldo or Karim Benzema - with proportions for the referee. On Sunday morning, Marciniak will wake up with the feeling that he has refereed the two most important matches in the world. It will be difficult for him to add more in the near future. Euro 2024 final? Probably too close to give it to him again. Perhaps he will decide that the offer from Saudi Arabia is the one that cannot be refused? And if he were to accept it, there would probably be only few people who would be surprised by this decision.

UEFA Europa Conference League Final 2023: Del Cerro Grande (ESP)

Carlos Del Cerro Grande crowns his long and dedicated journey as a referee with his first European club final assignment on Wednesday. The 47-year-old Spanish official from Madrid reaches this personal pinnacle after 30 years of devoted duty to his job when he takes charge of the UEFA Europa Conference League final between Fiorentina and West Ham in Prague. The accolade is the supreme achievement for the former police officer, who began refereeing as a 17-year-old and now figures among the tried and trusted veterans within UEFA’s elite contingent of referees. Del Cerro Grande is actually no stranger to major European finals. He served as a fourth official at the 2021 UEFA Champions League final between Manchester City and Chelsea in Porto, as well as at the UEFA Euro 2020 final between Italy and England at Wembley. Now he is relishing the prospect of his first final in the middle at the Czech capital’s Eden Arena. “It’s an amazing feeling – it’s definitely a dream come true,” del Cerro Grande said of his appointment. “It’s an honour and privilege to referee this match at this stage of my career, and I thank UEFA for putting its trust in me. I’ve worked hard as a referee and always tried to improve constantly, because I wanted to be given important matches and perhaps a final one day.”

Patient progress

Del Cerro Grande began refereeing as a teenager in 1993. Like many match officials, he took the path into refereeing after setting out in football as a player. “I realised that I didn’t have the skills to be a good footballer,” he reflected. “A friend of mine was a grassroots referee, and he encouraged me to try refereeing as a different way of enjoying being involved in football, I became ‘hooked’ on refereeing very quickly.” Patient progress to the top was to follow. Del Cerro Grande joined Spain’s top-flight refereeing team in 2010 and earned his international badge three years later. This season, he has officiated at five UEFA Champions League matches and one UEFA Europa Conference League match, including the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg between Inter Milan and Benfica.

‘You’ve got to be self-critical’

Del Cerro Grande has adhered to various personal beliefs on his refereeing pathway. “I think a referee has to show courage and especially mental toughness,” he explained. “And you’ve got to be self-critical – you can’t improve if you can’t be honest with yourself. You must be humble and keep your feet on the ground – you can feel like a king after a good match, and then the next match doesn’t go quite as well, so it’s always best to keep everything in perspective. Your next match is always a new challenge.”

Female assistant Porras Ayuso ‘a fine example’

A Spanish female assistant referee will be part of the refereeing team at the final in Prague. Guadalupe Porras Ayuso has already accompanied del Cerro Grande in major European club matches, making her UEFA Champions League debut in last September’s group encounter between Napoli and Liverpool. “Guadalupe is a fine example to all female officials in terms of what they can achieve,” said del Cerro Grande. “I’m very pleased that she’s a member of my team.” Porras Ayuso joins three compatriots – assistant referee colleague Pau Cebrian Debis, fourth official Jesus Gil Manzano and reserve assistant referee Diego Barbero Sevilla. The video assistant referee (VAR) role has been assigned to another Spaniard, Juan Martinez Munuera, and he will be aided by Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez (Spain) and Tiago Martins (Portugal). Del Cerro Grande and his team – “They’re so important, because they push me to do well throughout the season” – will seek to savour the occasion in Prague before getting down to their serious work from the opening whistle. “I think you have to enjoy the experience as well,” he said, “and we can do this in the warm-up as the atmosphere builds up – looking at the stadium, the crowd, taking in the moment. Then, when you walk out of the dressing-room and tunnel for the match, it’s total focus from that time onwards.”

Refereeing: ‘A university of life’

Family life and backing is crucial to del Cerro Grande when he enjoys downtime away from football. “They’ve been there for me in the good and bad moments,” the father of two sons aged 18 and 5 said. The day will soon come when Carlos del Cerro Grande blows the final whistle for the last time. He describes refereeing as a “university of life – you learn to make decisions and be confident in yourself.” When the time comes to stop, will he stay close to his ‘trade’? “I’ve gathered up so much experience during these years, and I’m always happy to give advice to younger officials,” he emphasised. “I will give back to refereeing in the future… it’s impossible for me to imagine not being involved in some way.” (Source: UEFA)

Brazilian Ricci joins PRO in North America

Sandro Ricci has been appointed as the Manager of Senior Referees at the Professional Referee Organization after an esteemed career as one of Brazil’s top officials. As well as being a prominent figure in Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A – Brazil’s topflight – Ricci joined the FIFA panel in 2011, where notably, he took charge of matches at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games two years later – both hosted in his home country. He was appointed again for the World Cup in Russia in 2018. He also refereed the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup Final between Bayern Munich and Raja Casablanca, a Copa America semi-final between Argentina and Paraguay two years later, the bronze medal match at the 2016 Olympic Games, and a 2017 FIFA Club World Cup semi-final. Plus, several Copa Sudamericana and Copa Libertadores tournaments, including the second leg of the Copa Libertadores Final in 2014.

After retiring in 2018, Ricci worked in Brazilian television as a pundit, specifically focusing on rules analysis. He now joins PRO in the role vacated by Alan Kelly, who was promoted to Director of Senior Match Officials at the start of the season. Mark Geiger, PRO’s General Manager, said: “Sandro was one of the leading South American referees for more than a decade, and his experience in the game, combined with his dedication and determination, will be positive for our officials. He also worked an Olympic Games and two FIFA World Cups, which will provide great insight for some of our officials who will have that opportunity themselves in 2026. I have spent time with Sandro while on international duty and he is the utmost professional with a strong personality that is well-matched for our diverse group of referees. We are all looking forward to welcoming Sandro to the team and excited by what he can bring to the game in North America.”

Spanish referee Mateu Lahoz breaks down in tears after his final match

The iconic referee was the man in the middle for Mallorca's mid-table clash with Rayo Vallecano as both teams brought their 2022/23 seasons to a close. He was then given a guard of honour at full-time with his family present at the game and watching on as both teams and supporters gave him a round of applause. The emotional scenes proved too much for Lahoz, who broke down in tears as he reached his family, including his two sons, who were waiting just off the pitch.

The 46-year-old has been a professional referee since 1999 and has been overseeing matches in the Spanish top flight since 2008, though is perhaps best known for dishing out a record number of cards in the quarter-final of the Qatar World Cup between Argentina and Netherlands. Lahoz brandished 18 yellow cards during the contest, including to Netherlands' Denzel Dumfries after the match had been concluded by Argentina winning on penalties. Argentina's manager and assistant manager were also booked on an evening which descended into chaos on the field.

His style of refereeing has often been considered controversial and unpopular among Spanish football fans, while he also developed a reputation as a showman. That said, he clearly had a talent for the role, as along with officiating at numerous World Cups and international tournaments, he was also selected to referee the 2021 Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester City. While he eventually gained notoriety for his card-happy approach, Lahoz bucked the trend in his final match, choosing not to show a single card as he bowed out of the Spanish league. He could yet choose to officiate elsewhere, given it was LaLiga's decision to stand him down for the 2023/24 campaign. Mateu was not happy with La Liga retirement decision. During the match between Real Valladolid and Atletico Madrid, in which Lahoz was in charge, the referee was seen talking with Rodrigo De Paul, as per Movistar (via Sport), in which he appeared to suggest his unhappiness at the decision to retire him: “I am f*****, but hey, I’m leaving now.
