FIFA World Cup 2014 – Semi-final (Match 62)

FIFA has announced the referee for match 62 of the FIFA World Cup, the second semi-final between the Netherlands and Argentina. It will be officiated by 37-year-old Cüneyt Çakir (photo) from Turkey, and the encounter will be his third match during this competition after Brazil-Mexico and Algeria-Russia. Çakir began his international career in 2006 and was one of the first referees in his country to turn professional. He was selected for UEFA Euro 2012 where he took charge of a semi-final. He had earned a further semi-final posting in 2011, but this time in the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2011. Another highlight was to referee two matches at the FIFA Club World Cup 2012, including the final Corinthians-Chelsea. In 2013, besides returning to the U-20 global showpiece in his native Turkey, Çakir handled Ukraine-France in the World Cup preliminary play-offs. Cüneyt Çakir is the second Turkish referee to participate in the FIFA World Cup, 40 years after Dogan Babacan officiated at Germany 1974.

FIFA World Cup 2014 – Semi-final (Match 61)

FIFA has announced the referee for match 61 of the FIFA World Cup, the first semi-final between Brazil and Germany. It will be Marco Rodríguez (photo), who is 40 years old and from Mexico. During this tournament he officiated the group-stage matches Belgium-Algeria and Italy-Uruguay. Brazil 2014 is the third FIFA World Cup for Rodríguez and he refereed two games at each of the last two editions. In 2010, one of his matches was Germany’s 4-0 victory over Australia. During his career, Rodríguez has been selected for several international tournaments, including five editions of the CONCACAF Gold Cup (2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013), the Copa America 2004, the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2009 and three FIFA U-17 World Cups (2003, 2005 and 2013). At club level he has refereed three CONCACAF Champions League finals, and his most prestigious assignment was the final of the FIFA Club World Cup 2007 between Boca Juniors and AC Milan. He later oversaw Al Ahly-Corinthians in the 2012 semi-finals of the same competition.

Irmatov sets new World Cup record

Ravshan Irmatov set a milestone in the Netherlands – Costa Rica game, becoming the first referee to officiate nine World Cup matches. Four-time Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Referee of the Year, Irmatov handled the last quarter-final tie in Brazil, his fourth game at the competition, after overseeing three group stage matches: Switzerland – Ecuador, Croatia – Mexico and USA – Germany.
The Uzbek has been a FIFA referee since 2003 and made his World Cup debut in 2010 where he also set a few tournament records. The 36-year-old's first World Cup game was the 2010 opening fixture between hosts South Africa and Mexico. Taking charge of five matches in South Africa, he equalled the record for most number of matches officiated in a single World Cup, when he was selected for the Netherlands – Uruguay semi-final. At 32 years of age, he was also the tournament's youngest referee that year. The previous record for the most number of World Cup matches (8) overseen by a referee was held by three individuals. Joel Quiniou of France first set the record in 1994, before both Jorge Larrionda of Uruguay and Benito Archundia of Mexico equalled it in 2010.

Fernanda Colombo between refereeing and modelling

While waiting to return to the field as assistant referee, after her mistakes in two matches in the Brazilian Cup and the Brazilian Championship in May, Fernanda Colombo is looking forward to become a model and learns the techniques needed to succeed in modelling. "Is it good?” she asks the photographer. “For me, this is all new, I'm learning", she justifies. Opportunities abound: appearances on TV programs and even the chance to change careers. "If I wanted, I could enjoy the moment, but my priority will always be refereeing", she says, now able to return to football, after being suspended for three games.

This should occur shortly after the World Cup, but her fame (and, of course, her beauty!) will turn again the eyes of Brazil. "It's hard being a beautiful woman and doing what I do now, where everybody knows me, which increases the pressure. People will pay more attention to me, but I'm not afraid. I will suffer prejudice as a woman, referee and now famous. But I am well prepared."

Fernanda is currently sharing a flat with two friends in Santa Catarina, presents a sports program on the web and dreams to live just from football, either as a referee or physical preparer, "posing nude, for example, is out of my plans, because it would hurt me in refereeing. I do not want to go through this trial". Fanatical about football since childhood, Fernanda is watching all the matches of the World Cup to learn from the referees. Off the field, this 23-year-old blonde elects David Luiz, Thiago Silva and Neymar as the best players from Brazil. "The best saga of the world is with us, Brazil is playing well, has plenty of chances to win the Cup”.

FIFA World Cup 2014 – Quarter-finals (Matches 59-60)

The quarter-final match between Argentina and Belgium will be refereed by Nicola Rizzoli. The 42-year-old Italian has already officiated two matches at Brazil 2014, namely Spain-Netherlands and Nigeria-Argentina. Rizzoli (photo) oversaw three matches at UEFA Euro 2012, including the quarter-final between Spain and France. He has also refereed two matches of both the FIFA Club World Cup 2011 and the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2013.
Ravshan Irmatov, 36 and from Uzbekistan, will officiate the quarter-final encounter between the Netherlands and Costa Rica. It will be Irmatov’s fourth match of the competition after Switzerland-Ecuador, Croatia-Mexico and USA-Germany. At South Africa 2010, he took charge of five matches, including the Dutch semi-final victory over Uruguay (3-2). Furthermore, he has an impressive list of FIFA competitions on his CV, such as four youth tournaments, three FIFA Club World Cups, the Olympic Football Tournament 2012 and most recently the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013.

FIFA World Cup 2014 – Quarter-finals (Matches 57-58)

The quarter-final match between Brazil and Colombia will be officiated by Carlos Velasco from Spain. It will the third game in this competition for the 43-year-old Spaniard after the Uruguay-England and Bosnia-Iran group stage encounters. In the past, Velasco (photo) was in charge of two matches at UEFA Euro 2012 and the semi-final between Raja Casablanca and the Brazilian Copa Libertadores winner Atletico Mineiro at the FIFA Club World Cup 2013.
The referee for the France-Germany match will be Nestor Pitana. The international career for the 39-year-old Argentinian began in 2010, just three years after he made his refereeing debut in the Argentinian top league. In his confederation, CONMEBOL, he was in charge of the first-leg matches of the Recopa Sudamericana final 2012 and the Copa Libertadores decider in 2013. His first FIFA tournament was the U-17 World Cup 2013, where he refereed three games. At the 2014 FIFA World Cup, he officiated the Russia-Korea Republic, USA-Portugal and Honduras-Switzerland group-phase matches.
