Referee Danny Makkelie is back home. The 41-year-old referee from Dordrecht has been told that he will no longer stay at the European Championships in Germany after the group stage.
The best referee in the Netherlands whistled matches Germany-Hungary and Italy-Croatia in the group stage. In both matches, UEFA seemed satisfied with his performances, although the Hungarians were angry that a goal by the German Ilkay Gundogan was not cancelled, and Croatia questioned the amount of injury time (eight minutes) that was added to the match. The Croats were eliminated by a goal scored by the Italian substitute Mattia Zaccagni in the last action of the match. However, the referee does not determine how many extra minutes are played, but the VAR, in consultation with the fourth official, who then communicate it to the referee. Makkelie was the only Dutch referee at this European Championship. The competition between the match officials is very tight and UEFA is very satisfied with the level of refereeing.
