The top referee will not be seen in the First Division in the coming time. “It is for personal reasons”, says Ekberg. Otherwise, he does not want to comment on what happened and refrains from further questions. For private reasons, he wants to step aside for an indefinite period and not take on any more referee assignments.
38-year-old Ekberg is one of Sweden's most experienced elite referees and was the only Swedish referee at Euro 2020. He was promoted to the First Division in 2009 and has refereed 13 Allsvenskan matches so far this year, including big matches such as Häcken against Elfsborg (3–1) and the Stockholm derby between Djurgarden and AIK (1–0). The last match he officiated was IFK Göteborg against Djurgarden (2–1) in mid-August. When Andreas Ekberg will be back on the field is currently unclear. Contacted by Sportbladet, the referee boss Stefan Johannesson was not able to provide a clear response.
