CONMEBOL Sudamericana: 5 red cards and 22 minutes added by Roldan

Wilmar Roldan refereed the second leg of the Round of 16 match between Universitario de Peru and Corinthians. Everything seemed to be controlled by the Colombian referee until the last minutes, when a goal celebration made it one of the most complicated in recent years of his career.
The home team needed to overcome a 0-1 defeat in the first leg played in Brazil, Roldan had a very good first half, without any concerns. The second half was filled with tension after the first goal of Corinthians, when the visitors went ahead 2-0 on aggregate. At minute 77 came the first challenge for Roldan, when he penalized a handball in the penalty area by the Corinthians defense. The local team kept attacking in search of the goal that would keep them alive, but it never came; on the contrary, the second goal scored by the Brazilian team at minute 90+2 settled everything. The goal celebration caused problems, friction, and scandal, to such an extent that the police had to intervene. Roldan remained calm, observed the situation and leaned on the VAR, that gave him details of what he could not see. When the Corinthians players wanted to leave the field, Roldan called them back and started to hand out red cards. In total there were 5 red cards (4 players and 1 substitute): 3 for Universitario and 2 for Corinthians. Both teams ended up with only 9 players for the 22 minutes added on by referee Roldan.

Frappart at her third World Cup

Of all the summer competitions in recent years, French international referee Stephanie Frappart expects to experience a unique Women's World Cup, more significant than her first in Canada in 2015 or her second in France in 2019. "I have very good memories of the previous one, because it was in France and with the beautiful final in Lyon. We have seen a great boom in women's football between 2015 and 2019; we can expect even more play, intensity, and emotions for 2023. It's a busy season for me, like many of the previous ones. Since 2020, I have attended the Euro (men's 2021), the Olympic Games in Tokyo (2021), the Women’s Euro last year... My summers are devoted to major competitions but, frankly, we can't wait to be at this one. When we see that 80,000 people are going to attend the opening match, it means that we have reached another milestone. We had already seen it last year with the Women’s Euro in England, where it was phenomenal, but it will go even further.”
"It's quite an organization. You have to know yourself, listen to your body and plan everything. I am more in anticipation than in reaction, so I try to plan all this to be in the best condition. We have already experienced working together at the Euro. It's good because it puts more confidence, cohesion, and osmosis in the team. But the challenge is to be efficient, so to know how to say things to each other, when it's going well and when it's not going well so that we can be competitive when people are waiting for us on that side. It is a new experience at the level of a World Cup, including living together. When you are a bit the leader of the team, you have to manage all that, manage the blows of less well situations or better moments at certain times. Spending 50 days abroad is not necessarily easy when it comes to your first competition. With the experience of England, where it went well, there is no doubt about it.”
“I remember a great organization in Qatar and a great event with lots of people in the stadiums. The competition itself was magnificent in terms of play and a great respect between the players. There were very few red cards, it was a very fair World Cup. We have seen magnificent exploits from certain teams and that is the beauty of football: not being able to expect who will win. As it was concentrated in one city or so, I was able to watch 12 matches in the stadiums, while I had never watched any before in my life in these conditions. We witnessed two quarter-finals, going from Croatia-Brazil to Netherlands-Argentina, half an hour later in another stadium, it was fabulous.”
“At the Federation, I am the delegated director of women's refereeing part-time, to keep my referee part on the field. My role is both the development and promotion of refereeing, but also the structuring of a sector that is beginning to be semi-professional. My objective is to structure it well to support and put female referees in the best conditions, so that they perform well on the pitch. There are more and more resources and investments made by the Federation and we will end up with more and more efficient referees because we will support them as well as possible. I have been sharing my experience for a long time, I make sure to help them, to analyze their matches and to accompany them. It also helps me on my side to gain a little more confidence and assurance. It is important to share my experience.”

How much referees will earn at FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023?

The payment structure for referees at the Women’s World Cup varies depending on factors such as tournament edition, host country, and FIFA agreements. FIFA compensates match officials with a base fee per match, which differs for referees, assistant referees, and fourth officials. Referees may also receive additional allowances for travel, accommodation, and meals.
The 33 referees and 55 assistants are all women though only six women are among the 19 video match officials chosen for the 64-game 2023 WWC tournament; the video review team will also consist of 13 men. Just as a reminder, the VAR review system made its Women’s World Cup debut at the 2019 tournament in France. The six female match officials, including history maker Stephanie Frappart, who worked at the men’s World Cup in Qatar, were also selected by FIFA for the 2023 Women’s World Cup. The World Cup’s managerial body has set a $70,000 basic pay for referees and $25,000 for assistant referees for the first time in the competition’s history. The match fees are $3,000 for the group stage and $10,000 for the playoffs and final. A match official oversees an average of two games, and FIFA adds the match fees to their contracted pay. A referee who officiates at all stages, including the final, can earn up to $300,000. The assistant referees are paid $2,500 for the group stage and $5,000 for playoffs/final. The fourth officials receive the same fee as the assistant referees. The video assistant referees earn $3,000 for a match, which increases to $5,000 in the later stages of the tournament, with a possible total payout of $175,000.

Dean quits as Premier League VAR to become TV refereeing analyst

Mike Dean has decided to leave the refereeing body PGMOL, spelling the end of an era for the legendary Premier League match official. Dean, 55, spent last season as a VAR following on from his high-profile career as a referee in England’s elite league. He also spent time coaching match officials over the course of the last campaign. The transition in becoming an off-field official was a challenge after such a long career on the field. Despite one other newspaper reporting that Dean was found 'unsuited to VAR duties' after 'showdown talks' with PGMOL chief Howard Webb, this was in fact a decision made by Dean. In a statement, the Premier League’s refereeing body said: “PGMOL would like to place on record its recognition of Mike’s achievements as well as his immense contribution to refereeing and the game as a whole. We thank him for his dedication to the organisation over a sustained period of time and wish him every success for the future.”
Mike Dean has been snapped up by Sky Sports and will be a weekly feature of their new-look Soccer Saturday show after stepping down from PGMOL duties. Dean will provide expert analysis of refereeing decisions made in England's top-flight fixtures. The Saturday show, which started in 1992, will be broadcast from a new studio this season and Dean, 55, said it was 'surreal to be a part of such a well-loved show'. He added: 'With all the technology available in today's game, I think it's crucial that fans understand why decisions have been made, even if they don't agree with them!'
