UEFA Women’s Euro referees are raising the bar

"Being a female referee has undergone exponential change," says Spaniard Marta Huerta de Aza, officiating at a Women’s EURO for the second time. "I’ve been a referee for 20 years and since I started, there has been a really significant change. Taking Spain as an example – dedicating yourself professionally to being a referee as your only job was unthinkable years ago," she adds. The standards of female referees have only increased as a result, explains Huerta de Aza. "There are really positive advances in the refereeing profession. To be at a Women's EURO again, three years on, is even more difficult, because the female referees we have in Europe, in my personal opinion, are the best in the world – they demonstrate it in each international competition." New levels of preparedness are one of the ways in which the game is progressing, with UEFA helping to ensure that each member of the 13-strong Women’s EURO 2025 referee team was ready to hit the ground running. Physical and mental preparation are very important for a referee," says Huerta de Aza. "UEFA supports us with that, so we have a tailored plan to guarantee that we can be in optimal shape to take part in this tournament."
The referees were put through their paces in the lead-up to the tournament in UEFA training sessions. Notably, each has passed the same fitness tests as the elite male referees. "It’s quite a long preparation," said Stéphanie Frappart, one of the game’s leading referees. "We’ve been working on [fitness] for several months now, with remote training sessions supported by a fitness coach."
Perhaps naturally, as the pool of women’s referees has developed, perceptions of the role have changed, too. "It’s very different to how it was when I was 13 years old and started refereeing," says Swedish referee Tess Olofsson, also refereeing her second Women’s EURO. "Back then, we didn’t have many female referees or role models," says Olofsson. "Suddenly, women’s football has really developed, both in terms of refereeing and playing. It is fantastic to see that there are so many professional female referees out there who can make a living out of this job."
The women’s game is keeping pace with the men’s on the technological front, too. Alongside video assistant referees (VARs) and goal-line technology, semi-automated offside and connected ball technology is in operation at a Women’s EURO for the first time – matching what was deployed at the men’s EURO in 2024. "To be able to work with the semi-automated [technology] is an improvement that we’re grateful to have in women’s football," explains Huerta de Aza. "Anything that can help us to improve and make fairer decisions is good for football, for referees and for spectators. All the new technologies – such as VAR and now the connected ball and automatic offsides – are tools that will help us make a decision," agrees Frappart. "We will save time and make more accurate decisions. That’s the aim – being accurate in our calls and saving time so that we see more football." (Source: UEFA)
"I think being a referee is a very good experience that teaches you a lot," says Italy’s Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi, who made history in 2023 as the first woman to take charge of a men’s Serie A match. "You can grow up as a person, you learn to take decisions – especially for me, [when I took up refereeing] I was an age at which it’s not so common that young girls are used to taking decisions. For me that was very precious." Romania's Alina Peşu, who officiated Switzerland’s sold-out opening match against Norway in Basel, adds: "Refereeing builds personalities. After you start to be a referee, you start to be more mature – being confident in different situations, also [off] the field, and being in control."
"Refereeing gives us the chance to perform on big stages, in big tournaments like this one," says Portugal’s Catarina Campos. "I think this is something that could give the motivation to other girls to become referees. It’s a really credible way to be part of football and I hope that more and more girls decide to do it, challenge themselves to do it, because this is a real passion. It’s something that makes us feel really, really good and really proud." "With football, you will [meet] a lot of friends and lots of cultures," says Croatian referee Ivana Martinčić, who took charge of the Women’s Champions League final in May ahead of Women's EURO 2025. "You will see other countries and continents, you will meet a lot of people – for me, this is really something. I never thought I would do this, but I really enjoy it – and that’s the most important thing." (Source: UEFA)
Just a year after taking charge of the 2024 UEFA Women’s Under-19 EURO final, Italian referee Silvia Gasperotti has stepped onto an even bigger stage – her first Women's EURO. "It’s an incredible opportunity, a privilege, and an honour to be here," said Gasperotti. "But above all, it carries the great responsibility of representing UEFA in this tournament." The Women’s Under-19 EURO provided Gasperotti with the perfect opportunity to prove herself on the international stage. "Refereeing a final is always a great honour. It’s also a huge responsibility because you have to prove through your work and attitude that you deserve the trust of those who appointed you for that match," she said. "At the same time, it serves as a business card – a way of introducing yourself to the world. It has also motivated me to keep getting better and strive for new goals." Gasperotti has grabbed that opportunity, having taken charge of Norway’s Group A clash with Finland and the Group C encounter between Sweden and Germany at Women's EURO 2025. She sees the chance to learn from the wider refereeing team as key to her development. "I've had the opportunity to speak with women who have already had this experience," she said. "Their insights helped me understand what was required and what I had to work on in order to be ready for this great opportunity. "I’ve closely followed the suggestions and the plans provided by the fitness coaches with the aim of further improving my skills and trying to reach the high standard that is required by UEFA," she said. Gasperotti grew up with a love for football, inspired by following her brother to matches. A friend encouraged her to take a refereeing course, which kick-started her journey. "I started getting interested in refereeing as a way to experience the world of football through a different perspective," she recalled. "Being a referee helped me grow as a woman. It helps you face difficulties, meet great people and get out of your comfort zone." For Gasperotti, the Women’s EURO is just the beginning of her journey. "I want to work at my best in order to earn every next game," she said. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I want to get the most out of it. There will definitely be new milestones to reach and new goals to pursue." (Source: UEFA)

The Twin Referees at WAFCON 2024

At the ongoing CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, two women from Rwanda have not just stuck as a pair, they’ve added layers of allure and feel that is striking. Twins Aline Umutoni and Alice Umutesi are living the dream and mirror intentional synergy, strength and sisterhood. In the quiet valleys and green hills of Rwanda, where resilience echoes in every breath and every heartbeat tells a story of rebirth, these two sisters have risen. Theirs is a tale of storied grace, grit and glory. Their dominance is not merely reflections of each other, but as beacons of hope.
Aline and Alice are not just twins by birth, but twin flames in the world of African Football officiating, dominating a sport that few decades ago was a no-go-area for women. Their journey began on familiar fields, laced with childhood dreams and teenage tenacity. “I remember when we were just in Germany with the national team,” Aline recalls, her voice a nostalgic brushstroke on the canvas of memory. What was once a playground became a proving ground; what started as a love for the game transformed into a deep vocation to interpret, protect, and elevate it. Their roles are distinct yet complementary, Aline, the central referee, presiding with poised authority; Alice, the assistant referee, scanning every inch of the pitch with an eagle eye and unwavering discipline. “Yes, our styles are different,” Alice affirms. “She’s in the center. I’m on the flank. But we move with the same heart.” The two have always shared more than just DNA. Their journey into football officiating wasn’t just a career choice, it was a reflection of their bond. “Because we are real twins, if she likes something, I have to like it too. It’s mandatory,” said Aline, with a laugh that punctuates their sibling dynamic. But sharing the same ambition also required compromise. Initially, both trained as central referees until their Coach Mbake offered them advice that would later prove useful. “He told us, ‘Alice, if you stay as a referee, and Aline also stays as a referee, it’s as if you are competing,’” Alice recalled. “So, we decided Aline would stay as central referee, and I’d work as an assistant.” That decision wasn’t just practical; it aligned with their personalities. “I chose to be the central referee because I’m bossy. Secondly, I’m responsible. I like to make decisions,” said Aline. Alice quickly adds, “But you're a little shy”, to which Aline replied: “I’m not shy on the pitch.” The pair add that given the nature of football, they’ve had to make room for critcism as that was the only way they could grow. “Of course, we criticize each other,” Alice admits “That’s how we grow. That’s how we get better.” Aline agrees, unapologetically candid: “We tell each other the truth. And when the truth brings change, we embrace it. Then life goes on…If you work according to the law,” Alice says firmly, “you stay strong and keep working. That’s it. Her mistakes are my mistakes,” said Alice. “So, if she makes mistakes, I have to criticize her to correct her next time. It’s for our own good.” Aline nodded in agreement. The two carry Rwanda proudly on their shoulders, not as a cross to bear, but as a beautiful badge of honour. As the only set of twin referees in a major continental tournament in recent memory, they represent a profound national and symbolic significance. “It’s good when you represent your country,” said Aline. “So, we’re very proud to represent Rwanda. To represent your country as twins,” Alice says, “is a pleasure. We are very, very proud.” And they’ve earned that pride. Aline's greatest moment? Standing tall at the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON, Morocco 2024, officiating a match between Botswana and Nigeria. “So much was going on,” she reflects. “But we managed. And I was very happy.” But behind the polished boots and sharp whistles is a story of transition and transformation. Before refereeing, they were players. And when their days with the ball at their feet began to fade, they chose not to walk away but to launch deeper into football – a love affair that is unwavering. “In life, you must have a goal,” Aline explains. “Ours was to stay in football. So we trained, we committed. And now, we are here. At first, we just had the goal to work, to get far, to stay in the field of sport. That’s why we worked a lot, we did a lot of training. And here we are today,” Alice re-echoed Aline’s thoughts. Off the pitch, their personalities blossom in simpler expressions. On a good day, when the whistles are silent and the pressure momentarily subsides, their sense of fashion is evident; the pair love dresses, the flowing and elegant type that allows them to be as expressive as they can. “From the top down,” Alice says, “it’s about what one wants to have. But there are times when I choose a dress, she says, no, I’m going to wear a jacket. No, I say no, Aline. Today, it’s a dress.” Their unique pairing often means they are assigned to matches together, something both find comforting and empowering. “That’s the advantage for us,” Alice said. “We play the same matches, we travel together.” To young girls who believe the field belongs only to men, Alice has this to say: “Refereeing is not only for men. We are women, and we are here. You can earn a living. You can buy a house. You can help orphans. You can do everything. The field is yours. For us, refereeing is life.” As they take to the field over the course of the WAFCON and beyond, they represent the unique African woman’s trait of tenacity and sheer determination. Rwandan Pride. Aline and Alice.

FIFA Club World Cup Final 2025: Faghani (AUS)

The referee who helped open the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 will fittingly usher the groundbreaking tournament toward its unforgettable climax, as Australia’s Alireza Faghani has been appointed to officiate Sunday’s final between Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea FC. Faghani, 47, was selected on Friday for the upcoming showpiece at New York New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. The final will be his fourth match in charge at this Club World Cup, which kicked off on 14 June with Faghani overseeing the Inter Miami CF-Al Ahly FC clash at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. A two-time winner of the Asian Football Confederation’s Referee of the Year award, Faghani is no stranger to prestige appointments. But the opportunity to work a historic match like Sunday’s final, which will determine the first true global club world champion, is a dream come true – not to mention the result of weeks of preparation and years of hard work. “First of all, I have to just express my feelings. This is the first (FIFA) Club World Cup and it’s a real pleasure to be a part of this important tournament of FIFA,” Faghani said after learning of his gratifying assignment. “I feel great, actually. We [were busy for] two weeks with preparation regarding all aspects and then, finally, I received the final game.” Pierluigi Collina, the Chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, said Faghani emerged from an outstanding pool of Club World Cup referees that gave assessors plenty to ponder. “When we decide (on) the referee for a final, we always take into consideration several factors… of course, the performances delivered during the competition,” Collina explained. “They really (did) put us in a very, very difficult position, because there were many referees who would have deserved to [officiate] in the final. We chose Alireza Faghani and the rest of the team, because we think – we are convinced – that this is the best team for the final.”
Faghani earned his FIFA badge in 2008 and has refereed the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil – overseeing the final between the hosts and Germany – as well as the third-place play-off at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia. He also took charge of two group stage contests at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. He understands what goes into working and excelling at a major tournament, and he applied that knowledge effectively over the past month-plus in the United States. “Every tournament, it’s a privilege for us to be a part of the tournament. As I said, we had two weeks’ preparation. We worked on all aspects: team tactics, practical and, also, medical,” Faghani said. “We started the tournament in this way and, hopefully, all of the referees were on the same page, and, at the end of the day, I think the teams were also happy [with] the referees’ performance.” He added, “And I have to thank all the people who are behind the scenes, like administration, the instructors, and everybody who just pushes us to be prepared for the tournament.” This summer, Faghani also refereed the CA Boca Juniors-FC Bayern München Group C game in Miami and the Chelsea FC-Palmeiras quarter-final in Philadelphia. “We are very happy [with] the refereeing here. The standard was at the expected level. We implemented something new, like the referees’ camera, which was received in a great way, even beyond our expectations. So, I can say, (it was) great,” Collina said. “I hope that the team – our match officials of the 63rd match of the FIFA Club World Cup ’25 – will be at the same standard of the teammates [throughout] the competition. We are very confident that this will be (the case).” Faghani will be joined at MetLife Stadium by assistant referees Anton Shchetinin and Ashley Beecham, both Australian compatriots, as well as fourth official Facundo Tello and reserve assistant referee Gabriel Chade, both of Argentina. The video assistant referee (VAR) will be Germany’s Bastian Dankert. He’ll be supported by Nicaraguan assistant VAR Tatiana Guzmán and Croatian support VAR Ivan Bebek. With that team behind him, Faghani said he was ready to soak in the experience and confident about performing well on the biggest stage. “I’m 47 years old. This will be one of my last tournaments. It’s a pleasure, really, to be a part of the FIFA (Club World Cup) tournament, and I try to enjoy every moment,” he said. “Nothing is a surprise for us because we have been working (on) every aspect, so it will be a good game from both teams, and we are trying to do our best and be the best team in [Sunday’s] match." Collina: “Referees’ body cams went beyond our expectations”

Pierluigi Collina, the Chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, says that he is very happy with the refereeing innovations introduced at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, including body cameras for referees, advanced semi-automated offside technology and the new eight-second rule aimed at cutting down time-wasting by goalkeepers.
The inaugural edition of the new 32-team tournament was the first FIFA competition to feature body cams and Mr. Collina said they have received a positive reception. The trial aimed to explore whether the new camera angle can improve the experience for those watching on television and online by showcasing the referee’s perspective. “The outcome of using the ref cam here at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 went beyond our expectations. We thought it would have been an interesting experience for TV viewers and we’ve received great comments,” said Mr. Collina. “We were asked: ‘Why not in all the matches?’ and even more: ‘Why not in all sports?’“ He added that, while it provided enjoyment for the public, it was also “very, very positive” for FIFA’s own purposes. “We had the possibility to see what the referee sees on the field of play. And this was not only for entertainment purposes, but also for coaching the referees (and) to explain why something was not seen on the field of play,” he said. One example was the group stage match between Atlético de Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, where the referee did not see a handball incident by an Atlético defender because a player blocked his line of vision. “From this ref cam, (it) was absolutely clear that the referee could not have seen that incident live on the pitch,” Mr. Collina said. The video assistant referee (VAR) alerted the referee who awarded a penalty to Paris Saint-Germain after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor
The tournament also saw the introduction of an amendment to Law 12.2a, passed by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) at its 139th Annual General Meeting on 1 March 2025. Under the new rule, a corner kick is awarded to the attacking team if a goalkeeper holds the ball for longer than eight seconds, with the referee using a visual five-second countdown. Previously, the referee would award an indirect free kick if the goalkeeper kept the ball for more than six seconds. “It was very successful; the tempo of the match was improved. We had no time lost by goalkeepers keeping the ball between their hands for a very long time – as happened quite often in matches before,” said Mr. Collina, adding that violations were kept to a minimum with the new law. “The fact that only two goalkeepers were punished means that they really respected the rule. And by doing that, we achieved the purpose that we wanted, which was not to give corner kicks, but prevent the eight seconds rule from being not respected. The purpose was 100% achieved.”
An advanced version of the semi-automated offside technology helped speed up the decisions for offside situations and Mr Collina said this helped avoid situations where forwards run 30 to 40 metres only for the flag to be raised at the end. “The alert went to the assistant referees well before, when there was a clear offside position. So, it worked very well, we have the goals disallowed, correctly disallowed; we also had correct decisions supported by the semi-automatic offside technology – [we are] very happy, very pleased,” Mr. Collina said. A total of 117 match officials – 35 referees, 58 assistant referees and 24 video match officials – from 41 member associations were appointed to take charge of the 63 matches during the tournament. “It was a great competition. The people attending the matches confirm this, it was well played by players and well refereed by match officials. And all the referees who are here are 100% proud of being part, of having been part of this first time ever,” Mr. Collina concluded.
