Björn Kuipers will receive the Giulio Campanati international award for best referee of the UEFA Euro 2020 on 6 October, at 7:30 pm, before the start of the UEFA Nations League semi-final between Italy and Spain, at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milano.
Since 2014 and then every two years, the "Amici di Giulio Campanati" Association, along with the Milan AIA Section "Umberto Meazza-Giulio Campanati" and with the sponsorship of FIGC and La Gazzetta dello Sport, has assigned an award to the referee who most distinguished himself in the final phase of the World Cup or the European Championship, to commemorate Giulio Campanati, former international referee, head of the AIA from 1972 to 1990, UEFA Executive Committee member from 1968 to 1992, who died in October 2011. It is awarded by a jury made up of journalists and sport officials, representatives of referees and great referees of the past. The first edition of the award, on the occasion of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, was won by the Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli, who in 2016 made an encore at the 2016 European Championship in France. The Argentine referee Nestor Pitana was given the award for his achievements at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, while the Dutchman Bjorn Kuipers will receive the award for Euro 2020.
