Brazilian referee caught on TV while urinating on the pitch

A referee relieved himself in the centre circle after being caught short seconds before the start of a cup match in Brazil. Denis da Silva Ribeiro Serafim peed in his pants without taking his shorts down as he was being filmed on TV ahead of 45 minutes of first-half action.

He did it so discreetly the commentator failed to pick up on the extraordinary moment as he introduced the match official and two linesmen just before the start of the Copa de Brasil meeting between Boavista and Goias on Thursday. But eagle-eyed viewers noticed the telltale urine running down the referee's leg and the footage started going viral as the match was being played.

The video showed da Silva loosening his shorts after glancing behind his back and peeing virtually over the match ball before stepping away from the centre circle like a man who has just tripped in the street and breaks into a run to cover up his gaffe. A wet patch could be seen around his private parts, suggesting he had run out of time to use the toilets in his changing room before heading onto the pitch. The bizarre incident happened at the Elcyr Resende stadium in Saquarema near Rio de Janeiro. Boavista won the cup first-leg 3-1. Reporter Edson Junior added: 'The referee urinated before the match... in his pants. It must have been hard going through the first half with his pants wet.' Last summer, Eoin Bradley was spotted relieving himself on the pitch during a break in play in the Irish Cup semi-final between Coleraine and Ballymena United. The Coleraine forward scored a brilliant free kick and then missed a penalty. but it was his action when he didn't have the ball at his feet that caught the attention of viewers. He was later given a six-match ban.

Changes in the CONMEBOL Referees Committee

As part of the rotation process and the dynamism that characterizes CONMEBOL, the Referees Committee will have new members, as needed for the development of football in South America. “CONMEBOL thanks Hector Baldassi (ARG), Jorge Larrionda (URU) and Oscar Ruiz (COL), who, having reached the proposed objectives, conclude their responsibilities within the Committee, but will remain linked to CONMEBOL which needs their professional experience.”

They will be replaced by Rodolfo Otero (ARG, photo, AR in the World Cup Final 2006), Jose Buitrago (COL) and Dario Ubriaco (URU). “The new members will join the initiatives led by the area in order to give continuity to the actions that seek as the main objective to professionalize football through the participation of highly trained referees, not only in the aspects related to their role, but as effective people responsible for imparting justice on the playing fields, with the support of technology and with broader and more appropriate knowledge to the situation that the current football dynamics is experiencing.”

Kobayashi vs. Al-Jassim

Japan midfielder Yuki Kobayashi has apologised to Qatari officials for a "misunderstanding", after he accused a referee of threatening to kill him. Kobayashi, who plays for Qatar Stars League side Al-Khor, said after his team's 3-1 defeat to Al-Gharafa that the referee had told him "I'm gonna kill you" when he appealed for a corner kick. But the player retracted the accusation on Thursday, saying he had met with officials and realised the referee in fact said "I tell you". He tweeted: "I listened to the discussion between me and him, there is misunderstanding about his words I kill you, like I heard, but the sound is actually I tell you".

Kobayashi, who has eight caps for Japan, had claimed in a now-deleted tweet that the referee had waved away his complaints that the ball had touched an opposition player last, saying a "small touch is no touch. This is new rule." The midfielder said the referee then laughed at him, before saying "ok you're my opponent, I'm gonna kill you." Japan star Keisuke Honda had offered his former international teammate support on Twitter, replying with: "Yuki, I'm proud of you to say it bravely. It's unbelievable what the referee said to you." But on Thursday Kobayashi apologised to the referee "for all the tweets and the situation". "I love Qatar too much and i like to live and play here, really i didn't face any problems here all people respect me," he added. The 28-year-old joined Al-Khor from Belgian outfit Waasland-Beveren last September, after spending three seasons with Dutch side Heerenveen.
