UEFA Women’s U-19 Euro Final 2013: Mularczyk (POL)

For Monika Mularczyk, life at the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship has taken on a sense of deja vu. Having overseen the Group A opener between England and France back on 19 August, the Polish referee is preparing to handle Saturday's title decider between the cross-channel rivals. "I'm feeling happy, excited, proud – a bit of everything to be honest," Mularczyk told UEFA.com. "The first match I refereed at this tournament was the group game between England and France, which was 0-0, and I expect this one to be very even too. Both teams are at a similar level so I'm expecting a very good match." Her assistants for the final, which kicks off at 16.00CET (15.00 local time) at Llanelli's Parc y Scarlets, are Svetlana Bilic of Serbia and Armenian official Araksya Saribekyan. "Wales is a beautiful country, I'm very proud to be part of the UEFA team here at this tournament," said Bilic. "I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the Football Association of Wales – everything has been perfectly organised and I'm really pleased with the help and support we've had." Saribekyan, for her part, chose to highlight the spirit in which this competition has been played. "In every game, from the referees, players and the officials, I've seen nothing but fair play," she said. "I think that the meetings [UEFA Referees Committee member] Bo [Karlsson] had with the teams before the competition definitely helped this happen." Performing fourth official duties at the showpiece fixture will be Eleni Lampadariou, who underlined the invaluable time spent in the camp by three up-and-coming Welsh referees – Charlotte Carpenter, Rebecca Thomas and Ceri Louise Williams. "It was a useful experience for them and for us," said the Greek. "We all learn from each other here, it's very good for us and for our future. Staying on the learning theme, does Mularczyk have any advice for aspiring officials wishing to follow in her and her team's footsteps? "You need to believe that, if you really want something, you can make it happen. But also don't think your life only has to be about refereeing. I'm a good example of that – I have a family, I have a child. Finding a balance isn't always easy, but it is possible". (Source: UEFA)

Felix Brych - Referee of the Year 2012/2013 in Germany

The Referees Committee of the German Football Association (DFB) has elected Felix Brych as the "Referee of the Year" 2012/2013. Brych received the trophy in a ceremony at the Bayerischer Hof in Munich with views of the skyline. "The award is a nice recognition for the performance, but also motivation and incentive", said Brych, who just refereed the UEFA Champions League play-off match between NK Maribor and Viktoria Plzen. Since 1975, the DFB awards the "Referee of the Year", Felix Brych thus follows a number of well-known referees: Aron Schmidhuber, Hellmut Krug, Markus Merk and Herbert Fandel. Brych has refereed 18 games in the 2012/2013 Bundesliga. In the UEFA Champions League, he had four appearances, including the quarter-final between Real Madrid and Manchester United. Brych has been pre-selected by FIFA for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. At the Confederations Cup 2013 in Brazil, he was one of the four referees from Europe and recently whistled the match between England and Scotland, at Wembley Stadium, for the 150th anniversary of the English Football Association.

Eriksson reflects on Super Cup honour

Referee Jonas Eriksson spoke to UEFA.com about his pride at being appointed for the UEFA Super Cup, what inspired his decision to become a match official and what motivates him. Having officiated in UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League semi-final matches, Jonas Eriksson is well used to the big occasion, making him the ideal choice to take charge of the UEFA Super Cup between Bayern Munchen and Chelsea FC on Friday evening.
- Jonas Eriksson, how much are you looking forward to refereeing the UEFA Super Cup?
- A lot, of course. I've been refereeing since I was 14 or 15 years old and of course at that age you dream of officiating at one of the biggest finals – and this is one of them.
- You've already refereed some important matches in your career, where does the UEFA Super Cup rank among your highlights?
- A final is a final – a winner will be decided. To be appointed for a one-off, knock-out match is always something significant. I try not to rate the matches in terms of importance, I'm just delighted to have been appointed for this match and that UEFA have put their trust in me.
- What inspired you to become a referee?
- I felt a lot of referees didn't have the kind of communication skills I expected as a player at a young age – referees who could explain their decisions. Often they didn't have the fitness to be in the right spot. The quality of the refereeing was not good at the level I played at and I felt I could do better. They told me to do a course and do it myself – so I did.
- Who were your role models as a young referee?
- I spent a lot of time with Anders Frisk, Sweden's top referee until 2005. I followed him to a number of matches as a fourth official, but I also looked at other referees. I don't think you could copy one referee. It's too much about personality, but I learned bits and pieces from Anders and I looked at other European referees, Pierluigi Collina being one, Markus Merk being another, Hugh Dallas a third. All of them had different skills which I looked at and tried to adopt and develop.
- How important are man-management skills when you're out on the field refereeing 22 players?
- Of course it has a lot to do with man-management, the way you approach the players, the way you communicate with them and also prevent things from happening. You have to sell them the decision and get them to accept it. Sometimes you don't make the best decisions but you have to be very good at selling the decisions, otherwise you're going to have a very tough time out there.
- It must also take a lot of character and mental strength…
- I think self-confidence and the ability to sell your decisions – that means looking self-assured and being able to convince the players that I made the right decision – is very important. If you don't have that personality and trust in yourself, I don't think you can do the job.
- As well as becoming a successful referee, you also became a successful businessman. What is it that gives you the drive to get to the very top?
- I love football and I love to referee. Every week when I step out onto the grass I'm doing what I love most. I've had a fantastic life as a businessman as well, but since 2011 I've dedicated myself to being a professional referee and I'm having the time of my life.
- How are you and your assistants going to prepare for tomorrow's game?
- We received the appointments a few days ago. I've been studying the two teams technically. These are two well-known teams, we’ve all seen them before. Of course there are a few new things – they have new managers for example – but we've watched previous matches. We had a preparatory talk today and we'll have another tomorrow. We've done matches together in our domestic competition, too, and we've been doing some training together too. We're going to warm up, take a walk around the pitch and look at various positions to enhance our cooperation for Friday's match.

UEFA Super Cup 2013: Eriksson (SWE)

The UEFA Referees Committee has appointed Sweden’s Jonas Eriksson to referee Friday’s 2013 UEFA Super Cup match between UEFA Champions League winners Bayern Munchen and UEFA Europa League winners Chelsea FC at the Stadion Eden in Prague.
Eriksson, who is 39, has been an international referee since 2002 and has officiated in a total of 75 UEFA fixtures in his career. Last season, Eriksson officiated at six UEFA Champions League matches, including the quarter-final first leg between Malaga CF and Borussia Dortmund, as well as three UEFA Europa League matches, including the semi-final second leg between Chelsea FC and FC Basel 1893. At the UEFA Super Cup match in Prague, Eriksson will be assisted by countrymen Mathias Klasenius and Daniel Warnmark, with Stefan Wittberg acting as fourth official. Two additional assistant referees, Stefan Johannesson and Markus Strombergsson also from Sweden, complete the lineup of the refereeing team.

FFA locked out "rebel" referees

Football Federation Australia issued a stern warning to uncontracted referees when rookies handled two A-League friendly matches over the weekend. The A-League's top flight match officials shock match day omissions comes after FFA reportedly locked out 22 A-League uncontracted officials from last weekend's AIS-based referees preseason assessment in Canberra.
FFA made a strong stand when Jarred Gillett (photo) - the A-League's 2012 grand final referee - was scrubbed off officiating at the Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Heart clash on Monday. Less than 24 hours earlier the game Newcastle Jets and Wellington Phoenix was officiated by a Football NSW referee and not a FFA website listed A-League official. The friendly games snub comes after all uncontracted A-League officials including Australia's 14 FIFA-badged officials were willing to participate in the assessment which was conducted by Asian Football Confederation officials from Uzbekistan and Malaysia. It's understood FFA did not want the "rebels" to attend the seminar. But FFA seemingly upped the contract dispute stakes when Gillett was first assigned the Roar and Heart clash in Lismore, north eastern New South Wales before Football Queensland referees coordinator David Wiebe was appointed for the clash. Football NSW premier league referee Andrew Best was charged with Phoenix's 1-0 win over Jets at Rockwell Automation Park in Weston, NSW.
It's understood A-League referees and assistants are unhappy with the terms of the new contracts after FFA had less than a fortnight ago issued a 20 per cent increase - match officials' first pay rise in five years. A-League referees are also reportedly very concerned with two key contract clauses. FFA has the power to terminate contracts at any time and if match officials suffer losses while officiating FFA can also distance itself from those issues. A-League referees also have to pay their own medical expenses and do not get fiscally rewarded for training four times a week. Some referees are not up to date with superannuation payments from FFA. Sources have also claimed out-of-contract referees have been pressured into signing the agreements by state federation officials after recommendations had been tabled to FFA officials long before the 2013/14 A-League season budgets had been set.

O'Leary on cusp of World Cup dream

He's been there and "almost" done it but a match in charge at next year's FIFA World Cup in Brazil will do it for Whangarei's Peter O'Leary. Tikipunga High School's head of science and New Zealand's top football referee is eyeing the world's second-most popular sporting spectacle as the pinnacle of his long refereeing career that has taken him to far-flung places.
The 41-year-old's last assignment was a month-long trip to Turkey during the biennial U20 World Cup in June where he controlled two matches - Greece vs Mexico and Korea v Nigeria. It was his fourth tournament, having already been to Columbia in 2011, Egypt in 2009 and Canada two years earlier. New Zealand is hosting the next meet in 2015, with four matches to be played in Whangarei and O'Leary said he was in the running to officiate and may get a run in his home town. "I am part of the World Cup programme but the final decision (on referees) will be made in February 2014. There are 51 other referees around the world vying for 24 spots. At the moment it's an open list so if I make a mistake, my name may be removed from the list. There's someone there (FIFA) to view me in my games that I do in the weekends," he said. O'Leary is following a specific training guide, including filling logs, sending heart-rate data once a month and tests on the laws of the game that are monitored by FIFA officials in Malaysia and Zurich.
Though never a good player himself and felt uncomfortable as a coach, he always wanted to be involved at the elite level of football and his first break came 21 years ago when a friend inspired him to take up the whistle. "That hunger for refereeing is definitely there. For me, the World Cup is the pinnacle ... it's the cream of the cream and I've got to be optimistic while at the same time realizing that the road is tough." He makes special mention of his first international match as a referee - Australia and the Solomon Islands in Honiara in 2004, especially the security briefing prior to the game in light of ethnic tension on the island.
Tikipunga High School principal Peter Garelja described O'Leary as a living example of excellence whose sporting skills were being used to teach positive behaviour in students. "He's proved that you can live and work in a small city like Whangarei and still be an x-factor on the world stage." The New Zealand Referee of the Year in 2012, O'Leary was also selected to officiate at the London Olympics in 2012. In 2008, he became the first New Zealander to officiate in the English Premier League when he was fourth official in the clash between Aston Villa and Sunderland in Birmingham. O'Leary was a guest of top English referee Steve Bennett.

FIFA referee Liesveld escaped from burning car

Dutch FIFA referee Richard Liesveld could not referee his match yesterday because his car got on fire on the way to the match Roda – Vitesse in Dutch top league. The referee’s car burned out completely. Liesveld heared a strange noise while driving so he stopped at the first gas station. He did not notice anything at first glance and wanted to continue, but then people who were near to the car warned him that his car was burning from underneath. The referee could get out safely, but was not able to take his referee equipment with him. A witness said that they couldn’t get closer (see picture below) because glass was going everywhere. The referee talked on Twitter about the incident. “I was startled enormously. It’s so surreal if you see the car you just have driven in burned down in just five minutes", tweeted Liesveld.
Dutch FA appointed Ed Janssen to replace Liesveld, so the match was still played. Police is investigating the case. Dutch FA thinks it’s just a technical problem in the car and not something which was planned by angry football fans.

Boyce promises best refs for top games

British FIFA vice-president Jim Boyce says he is "shocked and honoured" to be awarded one of the most important roles within the game, head of FIFA Referees Committee, and says he will do all he can to make sure the best officials are used in major competitions in order to avoid any hint of corruption or dirty tricks.
Boyce recently ran the FIFA under-20 World Cup organising committee in Turkey and is understood to have impressed FIFA with his organisational skills. Nevertheless, the Northern Irishman was stunned at being appointed referees boss in succession to Spain's Angel Maria Villar as part of a political-style reshuffle by FIFA. "This came completely out of the blue and I'm both shocked and honoured," said Boyce, part of whose remit will be to oversee referees selected for next year's World Cup in Brazil and other FIFA competitions. "It's an incredibly important committee within FIFA and I will try to ensure that the best referees are appointed for the major matches. There has been criticism in the past about certain referees being chosen for certain games. I will try and ensure they are appointed on ability and credibility." Boyce is a strong advocate of goalline technology and says most top referees feel the same way. But, he said, he would instantly reject any sign of a move to extend technology to other areas of the game like offsides or penalties, the kind of slippery slope feared by UEFA president Michel Platini who is leading the anti-goalline technology lobby. "Let me make it clear that I am totally and utterly against any other form of technology," declared Boyce. "But I'm 100 percent behind goalline technology and I'll tell you why. Other things like penalty decisions are opinions. A goal is fact. It was either over the line or it wasn't. For many years when I was a match delegate, I spoke to most of the top referees and there was not one of them who did not welcome goalline technology because the game is now so fast".

The FA 150th Anniversary Match

The Football Association has invited the German referee, Felix Brych, to oversee the first ever international match in Europe with Hawk-Eye goal-line technology, England – Scotland, part of the FA’s 150th Anniversary. The four officials all hail from nations where English referees have overseen World Cup finals. England is the only nation to have provided four world Cup final (or final game) referees: George Reader in Brazil 1950, William Ling in Switzerland 1954, Jack Taylor in West Germany 1974 and Howard Webb in South Africa 2010. The FA has appointed officials from those nations: Brazil (assistant referee Alessandro Rocha), Switzerland (fourth official Alain Bieri), Germany (referee Felix Brych) and South Africa (assistant referee Enock Molefe).
“The standard of English refereeing at the highest level continues to be one of the domestic game’s biggest success stories”, said David Elleray, chairman of the FA’s referees’ committee. “Just last month, Sian Massey was appointed first assistant referee for the UEFA Women’s Euro final in Sweden. Mark Clattenburg refereed the 2012 Olympic final at Wembley. In 2010, Howard Webb preceded his World Cup appointment with the UEFA Champions League final”.
