Villa Gutierrez will retire after the Women’s Euro final

The Spanish assistant referee Maria Luisa Villa Gutierrez will use her flag for the last time on Sunday and that will be one the matches she could get, the Women's European Championship final, Germany – Norway, to be played at the Arena Friends Solna, Stockholm.
Villa Gutierrez will leave behind more than 400 games and the 'privilege' of being the only woman to reach 1st Division in Spain, a category that could not debut because she failed the fitness tests. A blow from which she managed to recover and resume his successful refereeing career in the second category B. The age limit will force her to retire this season, after being at Olympic Games, World Cups, European Championships and even a Women's Champions League final.

Referees get invaluable experience at U19 finals

The 2013 UEFA European Under-19 Championship is providing an important daily learning curve for the match officials working at the final tournament in Lithuania. Besides nurturing the future of Europe's footballing talent, the UEFA European Under-19 Championship final round also provides the tournament's referees with an important opportunity to hone their own developing skills.
Jozef Marko, a member of the UEFA Referees Committee attending the finals, said he has been particularly impressed by the standard of officiating at this, the first U19 championship to be held in Lithuania. "The referees have already shown their qualities and based on those they have been selected for this tournament; the process is very simple," he said. "The referees here are not beginners. The majority of them has been on the FIFA list for four or five years and has proved their quality over a period of time." The match officials are in daily contact at their base in Kaunas, with meetings and briefings organised by the Referees Committee as well as physical training regimes forming a significant part of their learning curve. "We arrange several seminars for them and show DVDs while issuing methodological information," Marko continued. "We observe their progress. Many of the referees are going step by step. Some have officiated at Under-17 level or at other tournaments as well as UEFA club competition matches. The process is to follow and increase their quality. "The main points here in Lithuania are to teach the referees to reach a high level of interpretation of the Laws of the Game," Marko explained. "Protecting the health of the players and the image of the game are also important points on the road to reaching the level required by UEFA".
Taking time out from this busy schedule, two of the referees, Israel's Orel Grinfeeld and Martin Strombergsson of Sweden told UEFA.com that their experience so far has been both enjoyable and highly informative. "Being here represents a great opportunity and it's a big step in my career," Grinfeeld said. "I was in Serbia a month ago for the elite round but this is my first time at an Under-19 championship. For us it's very important to learn at such a high-level tournament and you learn something new every day." Strombergsson agreed, adding: "We talk about respect here all the time, and I mean everyone, from coaches and players to the referees. There are very good player-referee relations here. My first match at the finals was the game between hosts Lithuania and the Netherlands and my feeling was that there was a lot of fair play between the teams." Dovetailing with the constant fine-tuning of referees' on and off-field skills is their own personal desire for progress, with this event helping to highlight what could lie ahead for them in the near future. "My dream is to take the next step and referee a UEFA Champions League match," Strombergsson said. "I love football and watch that tournament all the time." An appearance at a UEFA Euro, meanwhile, figures prominently on Grinfeeld's refereeing wish list. For now, though, both are thrilled to carry on learning at the 12th UEFA European U19 Championship.

FIFA Referee Aleckovic suspended for sending inappropriate SMS

The Referees Committee of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Football Federation (BiH FF) held a special meeting on 23 July 2013 and suspended FIFA referee Emir Aleckovic for violating Article 5 of the Football Federation Code of Conduct. The case will be forwarded to the competent authorities for further action.
According to Nezavisne, Aleckovic was suspended for sending text messages (SMS) with inappropriate content to youth players. Their parents informed BiH FF, who suspended the referee. The decision was reported to UEFA, who immediately sent home Aleckovic from the U-19 Euro 2013 in Lithuania. UEFA says the case relates to "alleged wrongdoings in Bosnia-Herzegovina" and doesn't involve the under-19 tournament being played in Lithuania. The Bosnian federation said in a statement it suspended Aleckovic during its investigation. "He blackmailed young referees who were involved in the Talent and Mentor Program by sending them messages with inappropriate, offensive content”, said the father of one of the boys which Aleckovic allegedly sent text messages. He says that the application was filed with the consent of the parents of another boy and believes that his move will encourage others to speak out about the scandal rocking Bosnian football. "My son has started to train with Aleckovic a year and seven months ago, when he was still a minor. This lasted for half a year, then my son refused and told him to stop, at the cost of his refereeing career. The same happened to another boy and I am ashamed to talk about it. Aleckovic called the kids, telling them offensive words, talking to them about sex, rather than training. "If we go to police and the phone card is decoded, all the messages can be found there. I was present when Aleckovic asked my son, over Skype, to undress in front of a camera while he was watching. He asked the kids to not tell their parents about it, to trust him and to love him more than their parents". The worried father says that he will take further steps after consulting with a lawyer and meeting with Aleckovic, who returned to Sarajevo. "I am waiting for Aleckovic to come back to talk. He called me from Lithuania and begged me to talk with him", he says. Emir Aleckovic asked his cousin, Sarajevo lawyer Kemal Aleckovic, to represent him. "I sent a request to the BiH FF and until I see the documentation would not be ethical to talk about this case. Emir verbally authorized me to take care of the case. We talked this morning, when he was at the airport in Lithuania. I believe that he is not guilty and that he did not commit the acts for which he is charged. These charges compromised his career. The case will only be conducted within the BiH FF and I think that will be able to solve it", said the lawyer.
Aleckovic, who is 33, was promoted to FIFA's list of international referees in 2010. He was among the six referees selected for the UEFA U-19 Euro tournament and was appointed to only one match, France – Georgia, played last Saturday. He refereed a World Cup qualifier last September, when Hungary won 5-0 in Andorra.

FIFA U-20 World Cup Final 2013: Garcia (MEX)

On Saturday, Mexican referee Roberto Garcia will officiate the eagerly-awaited FIFA U-20 World Cup Turkey 2013 final between France and Uruguay in Istanbul. The 38-year-old will be assisted by his compatriots Jose Camargo and Alberto Morin, with the Ivorian Noumandiez Doue serving as fourth official. After taking charge of the match for third place, among others, at the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2011 in his homeland, Garcia’s nomination to referee this final represents the next step in his career. FIFA.com caught up with the official for his thoughts ahead of the title-decider.
- What does it mean to you to have been nominated as referee for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Turkey 2013 final?
- When I heard about it, I was just incredibly proud and happy. I was delighted for my family and my two assistants too. Without doubt it’s the highlight of my refereeing career so far and a huge step forward for me in terms of my future. However, I've never forgotten how much hard work has gone in to me getting this far.
- How did your family react?
- Thankfully they’ve been very supportive of me and have encouraged me every step of the way. I called them as soon as I found out and obviously they were all over the moon. They went absolutely crazy!
- What kind of match are you anticipating between France and Uruguay?
- I expect it to be a very demanding game. Both teams have exceptionally talented and, above all, experienced players in their ranks. I think it'll be a fast-paced, hard-running encounter.
- How will you prepare yourself both mentally and tactically for the final?
- It's important not to get too wound up and to stay fully focused. You need to try and maintain the same level of healthy tension you've had at the tournament in previous weeks. My assistants and I are a very experienced team and we're really looking forward to the final and welcome the accompanying responsibility that brings. The tactical preparations are important too. The instructors in FIFA's Refereeing Department will prepare us perfectly with, amongst other things, numerous video clips of the games so far, which we'll analyse together. We’ll also simulate and practice certain match situations during our daily practical training with players. To enhance our preparations we have access to the DVDs of all of the games played here to date and on top of that we'll have a tactical match discussion with FIFA's Technical Study Group (TSG).
- How important is teamwork and solidarity between you and your colleagues?
- It's invaluable to me. It helps in taking care of all the administrative, technical and medical side of things surrounding each game. It wouldn't be possible for everything to run smoothly without that sense of togetherness and a good collective morale. It's extremely important to all of us. That's why we have a special ritual: immediately before each game we embrace, forming a tight circle, and we encourage each other.
- How did you start out as a referee?
- Ever since I was a small boy I've always been incredibly passionate about football. I made it into the second division in Mexico as a player and when I was 23 a good friend of mine persuaded me to do the basic refereeing courses. I'm happy to admit I enjoyed it immensely right from the off.
- Vanishing spray has been used for the first time at a FIFA tournament here in Turkey. What are your first impressions of it?
- There's no doubt that it’s a huge help for us, especially when it comes to maintaining the required ten-yard distance between the ball and the wall at free-kicks. As a result, I think we're going to see more goals from free-kicks in future.
- How did referees prepare to use vanishing spray prior to the tournament?
- In May, all 52 refereeing candidates went to a seminar on the topic in Rio de Janeiro, where we were given excellent and very interesting training about it. In the first few weeks here in Turkey we also had some practical training sessions with vanishing spray so that we could get used to implementing it during games.
- After the tournament finishes, the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil is just around the corner...
- That’s true. I would love to be at the World Cup in Brazil next year. In Massimo Bussaca we have a fantastic instructor who’s preparing us for that and who conveys the philosophy we represent as referees in a wonderful way. But to be honest, at the moment all I’m thinking about is the U-20 final in Istanbul. That’s the most important thing right now. (Source: FIFA)
